Community Running Buddy
Girls on the Run DC recruits up to 130 community running buddies to support our young girls during the 5k experience. Here are some frequently asked questions about community running buddies:
Why do you need community running buddies?
All GOTR participants are required to run the 5k with an adult. Many of the DC girls don’t have someone in their family who can participate, so community buddies are a great way to support the girls on the race day.
Why do Community Running Buddies need to undergo a background check?
Girls on the Run International requires any community member interacting with a Girl on the Run participant on race day to undergo a background check. This is at no cost to the buddy.
Do Community Running Buddies pay to run the 5k?Yes, all community running buddies pay to run the 5k. The 5k is a fundraiser to support program scholarships for girls throughout the city. However, all community running buddies do receive a special “Running Buddy” shirt as a thank you on race morning.
How much is it to run the 5k?
Race registration is $25 up until a few weeks prior to the race and then it will increase to $30.
When is a community running buddy notified of the girl he/she will run with on race day?
Community running buddies will be assigned individually to a team the week leading up to the race. On race day, the buddies will meet the team at the team sign and be introduced to the girl he/she will run with.
