GOTR-DC Goes to the White House

To celebrate International Day of the Girl on October 11, participants from two Girls on the Run - DC (GOTR-DC) teams, School Within School and Two Rivers Elementary, had the incredible opportunity to visit the White House as part of the inaugural Girls Leading Change event.

This event recognized the accomplishments of 15 remarkable young women, selected by the White House Gender Policy Council, who are tirelessly dedicated to fostering positive change in their communities and schools. Their efforts span a wide range of causes, from advocating for disability rights and supporting refugees to combating anti-Semitism, addressing poverty in schools, and promoting voter engagement.

During her opening remarks, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, expressed her belief that every girl has the power to achieve incredible things and that age should never be a barrier to fighting for one's convictions. She stated, "We need your insight and your innovation, your strength and hope right now."

Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House Press Secretary, also shared her insights and experiences, highlighting the importance of fearlessness in shaping one's future. “As women, young women, we need to be fearless - to strive and thrive. We must be fearless to bulldoze through the obstacles that are placed in front of us every day,” she said.

These sentiments resonate deeply with the mission of GOTR-DC, which seeks to instill these values in each program participant every season.

The event was attended by Jennifer Klein, Director of the White House Gender Policy Council, numerous Congresswomen, and other female changemakers, along with over 100 girls representing various organizations, including the Girl Scouts of America.

Our teams left the White House with hearts full of inspiration, determination, and a profound sense of purpose. They witnessed firsthand the transformative power of women and girls uniting to effect change. This experience is sure to remain with them throughout their journey as they continue to grow, lead, and inspire others.

Our girls are not merely racing toward a finish line; they are running toward a brighter, more inclusive, and compassionate world.

Stay tuned for more inspiring stories and incredible journeys as we continue to empower, educate, and motivate the next generation of young leaders.
